PIKORATE: Sodium Picosulphate 5 mgSYRUP is available in a PET packing of 100 ml. General Physicians and Gynecologists prescribe this syrup for relieving the problems of constipation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
When syrup containing sodium picosulfate is taken orally, the contents of the syrup reach the colon but are not significantly absorbed. Enterohepatic circulation is therefore prevented. The active form, the free diphenol, is created in the colon through bacterial cleavage. As a result, the release of the active ingredient from the preparation determines the duration of the beginning of the action, which ranges from 6 to 12 hours. Only a minimal amount of the medicine remains in the system after dosing. Urinary excretion following oral treatment shows a modest systemic load. Plasma levels of the active diphenol do not correlate with the laxative effect.
